Balance • Moderation • Melding
Temperance is balance but in a different way we may be used to. Trusting that their life is made of the right elements, Temperance simply “tempers”—that is, melds with fire and water, different aspects together. Temperance is a determined willingness to make things work for you even when they seem to be working against you.
The Fool meets Temperance by a serene lake, a much needed sight after encountering Death. With fire in their hand, Temperance appears to be another destructive force. Instead, Temperance brings the fire to the water. They create a third element: steam. In that moment, The Fool realizes it’s not about good or bad, pleasurable or painful. Every element has its properties that can be used to one’s advantage.
Temperance is a positive card to get as a creative person or in a career reading. Although you may be feeling lost on the next step, Temperance reminds you to keep a steady head and think of the possibilities available to you. Have faith that the live you’ve created has the elements you need to evolve. It’s just a matter of putting them together in the right amounts.
Imbalance • Lack of Vision • Excess
When Temperance appears reversed in a reading, it may be a sign that you are not planning for the long-term in a responsible way. Temperance brings a message of moderation—sometimes taking less of what you want so that you can meet your goals. You must be more methodical in how you mix elements of your life. Too much of a good thing is still too much.
Because Temperance is associated with the sign of Sagittarius, Temperance reversed can also mean an approaching or blocked energy and time that is reminiscent of this sign: vibrance, inquisitiveness, and excitement. The best way to make room for this energy is to embrace freedom and to stay honest.
